Programs
Curing SOV is easier than you might think. There are plenty of stress-free transportation alternatives we offer that will get you on the road to recovery:
Carpooling
Share the ride with just one person and your gas, parking and other auto expenses are cut in half! Ride with more people, and you’ll see even more savings. If you don’t already know someone you can ride with, TRAFFIX can help you start or join a carpool for free.
NuRide
Join the nation’s first ridesharing network that lets you earn free rewards every time you share a ride. Get gift cards from Old Navy, T.G.I. Fridays, XM Satellite Radio and more, without ever having to make a long-term ridesharing commitment.
Park & Ride
Is not having a safe place to park your car stopping you from joining a rideshare program? Park & Ride lots are secure, convenient, and free commuter parking lots where people in your carpool or vanpool can meet up every day.
HOV Lanes
With enough passengers in your car, you can zip by traffic in the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. TRAFFIX has all the HOV schedules, locations and qualifications right here.
Vanpooling / Van Leasing
If a car’s not big enough to handle your carpool, form a vanpool instead. TRAFFIX can show you how to do it, and they can even lease your group the van.
The MAX
Live and work in separate cities? Get there faster and easier by catching the MAX, or Metro Area Express.
Ferry Service
For travel between Portsmouth and Downtown Norfolk, nothing beats the ferry. It’s fast, economical, and offers panoramic views of the harbor.
Public Transportation
No matter where you live, chances are good that public transportation can take you to work, to shop, and to play.
Teleworking
Ah, to work from home. We’ve all dreamed of it. Now, it’s finally happening. Many employers today encourage employees to work from home at least one or two days a week. Check with your employer or with Jeffrey Fykes for more information.
Biking/Walking
Get your exercise to and from work and come to the office feeling refreshed and ready to work. Check the TRAFFIX Web site to find bike routes.
Guaranteed Ride Program
It provides you a reliable ride back to your point of origin for only $1.50 ($3.00 for MAX riders) if you ever have to unexpectedly leave work early or stay at work late.
Commuter Computer
If there’s someone out there that’s right for you—same work schedule, works nearby, and wants to share a ride—the totally free Commuter Computer will find your perfect match.
Transportation Incentive Program
For commuters who travel to Naval Station Norfolk, we offer several options to help alleviate some of the stress of waiting in line to get onto base each morning, and even the challenge of trying to find parking. We have numerous commuters in our database who travel to the base each day, and perhaps live close enough to you to carpool or vanpool. There are also three Express Bus Routes that travel to the Naval Station from local park and rides: Routes 19, 22, and 63. As as added bonus, commuters who are eligible for the TIP program can commute via vanpool or HRT bus (both Express Buses and local routes) free of charge.
